Memorial Park

Memorial Park sits just outside Clitheroe and does exactly what it says on the tin - a proper nature reserve where you can actually see something living. It's the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss, which is fine by me because it stays relatively quiet.

The park is straightforward: woodland paths, open grassland, and the kind of wildlife you'd hope to spot if you've dragged your family to Lancashire for the fresh air. Depending on season, you might catch deer, various birds, and if you're lucky with timing, some decent wildflower displays. The walking is gentle - nothing that'll knacker you out, but there's enough path to justify being called a reserve rather than a quick stretch of legs.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers will find it useful as a gentle interlude between bigger expeditions, and families with younger kids won't struggle with the terrain. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. History buffs won't find much to chew on here - it's nature first, interpretation second.

Since the reserve sits just a mile or so from Broadwater Holiday Park and Haven Cala Gran, it's ideal if you're based at one of the Ribble Valley caravan parks and want a low-key morning out. Plan for ninety minutes to two hours depending on how many paths you tackle. It's free, naturally, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you just go. Worth fitting in if you're staying locally; don't reroute your entire trip for it.
