Inchmoan Island, Loch Lomond

You'll spot Inchmoan Island pretty quickly if you're walking the eastern shore of Loch Lomond - it's that small, wooded lump rising up from the water near Aldochlay. Getting to it properly requires a boat, which limits how many visitors actually manage a close look, but that's rather the point. The island itself was home to a monastery centuries back, though you won't find much in the way of structures now. It's more atmospheric than archaeological - just trees, water, and the kind of quiet you don't get in most places.

History enthusiasts will find it worth the effort, though families with young kids might struggle with the access issue. Kayakers do paddle out here, and locals occasionally take boats across. There's no visitor infrastructure whatsoever, so you're looking at a proper expedition rather than a casual stroll. Allow a few hours if you're determined to get there and back from Aldochlay.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Milarrochy Bay is genuinely excellent for caravans and tents, just 2.3 miles away - you can take the island as part of a broader Loch Lomond day. Combine it with a walk along the shore or a visit to one of the main settlements. It works well as the slightly wilder counterpoint to the more accessible loch attractions. Not for everyone, but if you like the idea of a bit of medieval mystery and don't mind the logistics, it delivers.
