Walking into Irish Road Plantation feels like stepping into someone's proper woodland - all quiet paths winding through established trees with that lovely damp earth smell. It's a working forest near Chipping Norton, the sort of place where you might actually spot wildlife rather than crowds queuing for the photo opportunity.

The woodland itself isn't vast, but that's rather the point. You get genuine forest atmosphere without the exhaustion of trudging for hours. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though wellies are sensible - it stays boggy in places even after dry spells. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour here, maybe longer if you're the type to sit and watch the light shift through the canopy.

This works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're staying at either Chipping Norton Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Cotswold Hills Country Park - both are less than five miles away. It breaks up what might otherwise be a full day of market town wandering and Cotswold stone villages. Proper walkers might find it a bit thin on the menu compared to the bigger forests across the region, but for an easy leg-stretch with some genuine woodland character, it's well worth the short drive from your caravan.

Bring binoculars if you're remotely interested in birds. The quietness means you're more likely to hear something worth seeing.
