Iron Age Settlement

Stone circles and ancient foundations scattered across the hillside near Harlech tell the story of Celtic life from over 2,000 years ago. The remains aren't spectacular - think low walls and overgrown earthworks rather than Stonehenge - but there's something rather moving about standing where families once lived, cooked and raised their children. You'll need to use your imagination a fair bit.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this site, along with anyone who enjoys a good ramble across Welsh moorland. The walk up from the road takes about twenty minutes through bracken and sheep paths, so proper walking boots are essential. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already into archaeology.

The views across to Harlech Castle and the Snowdonia peaks are actually better than the ruins themselves. On a clear day, you can see right out to Cardigan Bay.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Harlech - Woodlands Caravan Park and Castle View are both within easy reach - this makes a decent morning trip before the weather turns. Combine it with a visit to the more impressive Harlech Castle for a proper day of Welsh history. Just don't expect guided tours or visitor centres here - it's very much a case of turning up and having a poke about.
