Jackhouse Nature Reserve

The moorland stretches out in waves of brown and purple when you hit Jackhouse Nature Reserve, just outside Clitheroe. It's not dramatic - no peaks, no water features that'll make you gasp. What you get instead is proper Lancashire upland: rough grass, heather, maybe a bit of bog underfoot if you've chosen your season badly.

This is walkers' territory, especially those who like a bit of solitude without the tourist crush. The reserve sits high enough to offer genuine views across the Ribble Valley, and on a clear day you'll spot ridges rolling away for miles. The paths are decent but unpretentious - no fancy signage or visitor facilities, just land that's been left to get on with things.

Historically it's managed for conservation, which means you might clock some rarer birds and plants if you know what you're looking for. Casual visitors won't necessarily get a wildlife experience - it's not that kind of place - but serious birdwatchers could spend a solid morning here.

Allow a couple of hours minimum for a proper walk. It works well as part of a wider Clitheroe loop, especially if you're staying at Dearden Wood just down the road. The reserve itself is free to roam and there's no set entry point, which sounds lovely until you're squinting at an Ordnance Survey map trying to find a proper starting spot. Come prepared, wear appropriate footwear, and don't expect facilities. That's rather the point.
