Jackson Slack Hill

The walk up Jackson Slack Hill near Clitheroe rewards you with proper Ribble Valley views - moorland stretching away in all directions, the stone walls cutting through brown grass, and on a clear day you can pick out the hills beyond Pendle. It's not a serious fell, but that's rather the point. From the holiday parks clustered around Todber Valley and Ribble Valley (both within two miles), this makes a cracking half-day outing without needing a guidebook or special gear.

The ascent is steady rather than brutal, following moorland paths that get boggy after rain - standard Lancashire hill walking, really. Most people allow 90 minutes to two hours for a circuit, depending on how often you stop to actually look at the view instead of just trudging uphill. Families with older kids (say, eight plus) will find it manageable; younger ones might grumble about the final push to the summit.

Go early in the day if you want to avoid the cloud that rolls in by afternoon, even in summer. There's no visitor facility at the top, no café, no toilets - just the wind and the landscape. That's refreshing, frankly. If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts or Holgates nearby, this works perfectly as a morning walk before lunch. On a grey day it's atmospheric; on a sunny one it justifies the effort. Not spectacular, but solid Lancashire fell country that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from the caravan parks.
