James's Wood

A proper Essex woodland just east of Billericay, James's Wood offers something you won't find in the managed parks that dot the area. It's a working forest - no manicured paths or interpretive boards, just trees, clearings, and the sort of peace you'd forgotten was possible within striking distance of commuter country.

The wood itself is mixed woodland, the kind where you can actually get properly lost for an hour if you're not paying attention. Oak and birch dominate, with enough undergrowth to make it feel genuinely wild rather than simply undeveloped. Walkers and families exploring Barleylands Campsite or Stuarts Wood nearby should absolutely loop this in - it's close enough for a morning sortie but far enough removed that it doesn't feel like everyone else's idea of a walk.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit shapeless - there's no obvious loop or destination, which is either its greatest charm or its main drawback depending on your children's temperament. If they need waymarks and facilities, they'll get bored quickly. But if they like the idea of actual exploring, of finding sticks and spotting birds without a ranger telling them what they're seeing, this is gold.

It's free to enter and open all year. Allow two hours if you're taking it slow. Go in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn when the light cuts through properly.
