Jordan Hill

The walk up Jordan Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Guildford, and it's steep enough to get your heart going but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway. The summit sits at just over 500 metres, which doesn't sound like much until you're standing at the top looking back across Surrey's rolling greenbelt. On a clear day you can see the North Downs properly laid out - proper views for what is essentially someone's back garden on a map.

It's a walkers' hill, straightforward. Families with younger kids might find the initial push tedious, but primary-school age and up will manage it fine. The paths are well-trodden and fairly obvious, so you won't need to study the map obsessively. Allow an hour return trip if you're taking it easy, less if you're in training.

What makes Jordan Hill work in a park holiday context is its proximity to everything. You're minutes from Guildford and equally close to Wyldecrest Surrey Hills or Chapel Farm if you're based at either. It's the sort of walk you do before breakfast or after lunch, not an all-day expedition. The views themselves aren't dramatically different from other spots along the North Downs, so if you've already walked Box Hill or Leith Hill, you won't feel like you're missing anything. That said, if you're planning a few days around Guildford, it's worth the detour. Grab a coffee in town, do the walk, call it a morning.
