Kaim of BArras

The Kaim of Barras is a proper working forest - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've stepped into the Scottish Highlands rather than just wandered through landscaped grounds. It's a mixed woodland near Stonehaven, with paths threading through mature trees, and if you time it right, the light filtering through the canopy in late afternoon is something special.

This is genuinely better suited to walkers and anyone with an interest in forestry than families with small children. The paths are decent but there's nothing specifically kid-focused here - no playgrounds, no interpretive centres, just trees and the occasional wildlife sighting if you're lucky. That's precisely why it works. You can walk for an hour or half a day depending on mood and fitness, and the whole thing feels manageable from Stonehaven without needing to trek deep into nowhere.

It's free to access and there's no obvious visitor infrastructure, which means it's rarely crowded. Go early morning if you want to avoid other walkers. The best time is autumn when the light's lower and the colours actually shift, though spring's decent too if you don't mind muddy boots.

If you're camping at Upper Crawton Park or Cloak Caravan Park - both just a couple of miles away - this makes an excellent morning walk before heading to the coast. Pairs well with a wander around Stonehaven itself or a proper day exploring further into Deeside. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a broader Aberdeenshire trip, it's well worth the detour.
