Stonehaven

Dramatic cliff-top walks and a working harbour that still lands fresh catch daily - this Aberdeenshire coastal town packs serious punch despite its modest size. The rugged coastline here is proper wild Scotland, where North Sea waves crash against red sandstone cliffs that tower above rocky bays.

Half-moon Beach curves below the town centre, a lovely stretch of sand that's surprisingly sheltered when the wind's up. Walk south along the cliff path and you'll reach RSPB Fowlsheugh, where thousands of seabirds nest on the dramatic sea stacks - the gannet colony here is absolutely mental in summer. Crawton Bay offers more secluded scrambling if you're feeling adventurous, while Crawton Waterfall tumbles over the cliffs after heavy rain.

The Pier area buzzes with fishing boats and the occasional seal popping up to investigate. It's a proper working harbour, not some sanitised tourist trap. The cliff-top cemetery provides cracking views northward along the coast - sounds morbid but it's genuinely one of the best vantage points around.

Stonehaven sits roughly 15 miles south of Aberdeen via the A90, making it dead easy to reach by car. The surrounding countryside rolls inland through fertile farmland toward the Grampian foothills, while the coast path continues both north and south for serious hiking.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast. You're close enough to nip into Aberdeen for supplies or a night out, but far enough away to wake up to proper sea air and cliff-top walks.
