Ken Hill Wood

The woodland around Ken Hill, just inland from King's Lynn, is proper Norfolk - flat, quiet, and the kind of place where you'll hear more birdsong than car engines. It's not dramatic, and that's rather the point. Ancient woodland paths wind through mature trees, opening occasionally to views across the surrounding countryside, and if you're after a proper walk without the crowds of more famous spots, this delivers.

Walkers will get the most from Ken Hill Wood. The terrain is manageable - gentle, mostly level going with well-defined tracks - making it ideal for families with younger legs or anyone who finds steep hill walks a bit much. You can easily spend ninety minutes here, though two hours isn't excessive if you're the type to stop and listen to the place. Spring brings bluebells; autumn turns it into proper gold and bronze territory.

If you're camped at any of the nearby parks - Heacham Beach Holiday Park and Diglea are practically on your doorstep - this is exactly the sort of place to slip away to for a morning before heading back for lunch. It won't take your whole day, which is fine. The nearest towns of substance are King's Lynn itself and the coastal villages around Sandringham, so you're well positioned for mixing woodland walks with seaside time.

The wood is free and open to wander, though do check conditions after heavy rain - Norfolk drainage being what it is. Early morning is best if you want solitude; weekends get busier but never rowdy.
