The forest at Limekiln Plantation spreads across Norfolk with the kind of quiet that makes you forget King's Lynn exists just a few miles away. It's a proper working woodland rather than a manicured country estate - walk in and you'll find yourself among conifers and mixed native trees, the sort of place where locals come to stretch their legs without needing a visitor centre or a cafe.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland paths that wind through the trees, decent for families who don't mind a bit of mud, and brilliant if you're the type who just wants to walk without a map or a guide telling you what bird that was. The plantation feels genuine - less "attraction" and more "place where people actually go". No admission charge, no timed tickets. You turn up and you walk.

Stay at any of the holiday parks nearby - Heacham Beach is closest at just over two miles, or Pinecones if you want something smaller - and Limekiln works as a morning or afternoon break between beach time and the wider Norfolk coast exploration. It's not spectacular enough to plan a full day around, but it's the sort of spot that stops a week of caravan living from feeling samey. Walkers will appreciate it more than kids desperate for activities, though a decent romp through the trees keeps younger ones entertained for an hour or so. Best to go on a quieter day if you can - weekends pull in the dog walkers and that's when it loses its peace.
