Kendrick's Cave Lower

Scrambling down the limestone cliff face near Llandudno's Great Orme, you'll find a cave that most visitors walk straight past. Kendrick's Cave Lower sits tucked away from the main tourist trail, accessible only to those willing to tackle a proper scramble over rocks and through narrow passages. The entrance itself is deceptively small - you'll need to crouch to get through.

Once inside, the cave opens into a series of chambers that archaeologists have linked to Stone Age occupation. Bronze Age tools and Roman coins have been discovered here over the years, though there's little interpretive material to guide you through what you're seeing. It's essentially raw cave exploration.

This one's really for the adventurous types. Families with young children should give it a miss - the approach alone requires sure footing and a head for heights. Experienced cavers and those comfortable with unguided exploration will find it rewarding, though you'll want proper footwear and a decent torch.

The cave works well as an add-on if you're already exploring the Great Orme from Llandudno, though it's hardly a day out in itself. Allow an hour at most.
