Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden

The ruins sprawl across fourteen acres, and you can actually walk the whole site without feeling rushed. Kenilworth Castle isn't one of those places where you peer through a fence - you're properly inside the remains, clambering up towers and along defensive walls that still command respect nearly a thousand years after they were built.

The Elizabethan Garden is the star turn here. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, laid it out in the 1570s to impress Queen Elizabeth I, and even though time has taken its toll, you can still read the garden's bones - the formal layout, the reflecting pool, the terraces. It's the sort of place where you linger, imagining courtiers in ruffs wandering about.

Historically minded adults get the most out of this. Kids under eight will find it hard going after an hour or so - there's limited play space and the story is complex. But older children and teenagers interested in medieval England or the Civil War will eat it up. The castle's connection to both Richard the Lionheart and Oliver Cromwell gives it proper weight.

You're looking at two to three hours for a thorough visit. It's run by English Heritage, so check their website for current admission fees and opening times. Kenilworth town is walkable distance if you need shops or food after. Several caravan parks sit within four miles - Mousley House Farm and Warwick Racecourse are reasonable bases for exploring this part of Warwickshire.
