Kennel Plantation

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction, Kennel Plantation sits just inland from Plymouth and delivers exactly what you'd expect - woodland trails, decent shade, and space to actually breathe. The trees are substantial enough to feel like you've properly escaped, even though you're never far from civilisation.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a solid addition to a longer ramble around the area. Bring proper footwear; the ground gets boggy after rain, and the paths are root-strewn enough to trip up the unwary. Most people seem to do a loop in 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how lost you fancy getting. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shops, no car park attendants, just woodland.

If you're staying at Hidden Hill Devon, the luxury glamping spot with hot tubs a few miles down the road, this makes a natural morning outing before you settle in for the afternoon. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey, truth be told - there's no dramatic viewpoint to aim for, no wildlife centre, just trees. But if you're after somewhere to stretch the legs without faffing about with tourist infrastructure, it's well worth the detour.
