Kennel Wood

A proper woodland walk on the edge of Wrexham, Kennel Wood is the sort of place where you forget the traffic exists within five minutes. The forest isn't huge - you can work through the main paths in an hour or so - but it's got that genuine quiet that makes you want to linger. Mixed woodland, decent undergrowth, the usual suspects you'd find in Shropshire forestry. There's a network of trails that wind through, some muddier than others depending on what the weather's been doing.

It works best if you've got restless legs rather than time to kill. Walkers will appreciate the off-lead potential and the general lack of crowds, families with younger kids might get bored once the initial novelty of "proper woods" wears off after forty minutes. If you're staying at Archers' Meadow Glamping just six miles away, it's an easy detour for a morning stomp before breakfast or a late afternoon wander. The Wrexham side makes it handy for combining with whatever else you're doing in town.

The woodland itself won't blow your mind with dramatic vistas or hidden clearings - it's honest forestry rather than Instagram material. But that's rather the point. Go with realistic expectations and you'll leave thinking you've had a proper walk rather than been herded round a tourist trap. Bring decent shoes though; the mud can be genuine.
