Kielder Forest

The sheer scale of Kielder Forest hits you first. Spread across 80 square miles of Northumberland, it's England's largest man-made forest - all conifers and open space where you'd expect moorland. Drive in from Hexham and you'll understand why people either love it or find it a touch monotonous.

This isn't a nature reserve in the traditional sense. It's a working forest, managed for timber, but that doesn't stop walkers, cyclists, and families from spending entire days here. The main draw is Kielder Water - a proper reservoir that glints between the trees - where you can fish, kayak, or just sit by the shore with a flask. The forest itself has decent paths ranging from easy riverside strolls to more demanding hill routes. Mountain biking is big here, with marked trails cut into the woodland.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find the endless trees a bit samey after a couple of hours, though the water walks keep things interesting. History types will be disappointed - this is about nature and outdoor activity, not heritage.

Kielder Campsite sits right on the edge, a short walk to the water. Landal Kielder Waterside and Kielder Waterside and Lodges are both close by, making this a proper base for a few days rather than a quick stop. Access is free, and there's no entry charge for walking the forest paths. Allow a full day if you're doing anything serious, half a day if you just want to stretch your legs and take in the scale of the place.

Worth the drive from Hexham? Yes, if you like forest walks and water views. Don't expect drama - expect peace and plenty of space.
