Kilhenzie Wood

A few miles south of Ayr, Kilhenzie Wood is exactly what you want a Scottish forest to be - dense, a bit wild, and genuinely atmospheric. The woodland paths wind through mature trees with proper undergrowth, the kind of place where you'll actually feel like you've stepped away from things.

Walking here is straightforward enough. There's no theme-park treatment, no interpretation boards every fifty yards. You just get woodland as it is - muddy in places, dappled light filtering through, the occasional bird giving you a fright. It's the sort of spot where you can spend two hours wandering without trying particularly hard, or knock it round in forty minutes if you're on a schedule.

Families will manage it fine, though younger kids might get restless if you're after a proper long hike - it's more of a morning excursion than an all-day thing. Walkers and anyone after a bit of forest peace will get the most from it. There's something restorative about woodland this close to a town.
