Maybole Castle

The castle stands right in the heart of Maybole's main street, which is slightly odd - you're not trudging through moorland to find it, just parking up near the shops. Built in the 15th century, it's a proper fortress of a place, all thick stone walls and narrow windows, the kind of building that looks like it could withstand a siege (and probably did). The Earls of Cassillis called it home, and you can still feel that weight of history pressing down from the upper storeys.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, especially if you time a visit with one of the occasional open days - though honestly, even from the street the architecture tells its own story. It's not a grand palace kind of place; it's raw and functional, which somehow makes it more interesting than something too polished. The walk around Maybole itself is pleasant enough if you're staying in Ayr and fancy a half-day trip out.

Freedom Fields Glamping sits about six miles away and makes a proper base for exploring this corner of South Ayrshire. If you're after something busier, Haven Craig Tara is closer, though the castle itself is best visited when you've got energy for a bit of exploring on foot.

Be honest though - you won't spend more than 45 minutes here unless you're deep into Scottish medieval history. It's worth the detour if you're passing through Ayr anyway, but plan it alongside other bits of the Ayrshire coast rather than making it your main event.
