Killough Harbour

The working harbour at Killough is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, and that's precisely why it's worth the detour from Downpatrick. A proper little fishing village setup with actual boats coming and going - not a theme park version of maritime life, but the real thing. You'll see trawlers unloading their catch, nets getting mended, the usual controlled chaos of a working waterfront. The harbour itself is small enough to take in within twenty minutes, but there's something oddly absorbing about watching people actually work rather than perform for tourists.

It's best suited to anyone with a genuine interest in how fishing communities operate - kids under eight will get bored quickly, but teenagers or adults with any maritime curiosity will find it engaging. Free to wander around, though you'll want to be respectful of the working boats and fishermen going about their day. Go early morning if you can, when there's proper activity rather than just a few parked vessels.

If you're staying at Coneyisland Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a natural morning walk before heading inland. Edgewater Holiday Park is slightly further out but equally convenient. Neither park is far enough away that you'd skip Killough if you're interested in coastal stops. The novelty wears off quickly, though - treat it as a thirty-minute interlude rather than a main event.
