Kilnasaggart Pillar Stone

Standing alone on a hillside near Newry, this Early Christian stone pillar is older than you'd expect and far less visited than it deserves to be. Dating back to around the 7th century, Kilnasaggart is one of Ireland's earliest decorated stones, carved with a cross and ogham script that tells you someone wanted this spot marked as sacred a very long time ago.

It's a straightforward visit - you walk out to find it in open countryside, no fuss, no visitor centre, no queues. The stone itself is weathered but distinctive, and standing there you get proper solitude and a genuine sense of stepping back into early Christian Ireland. History enthusiasts will find the age and craftsmanship genuinely moving; casual walkers will appreciate it as a good excuse for a leg stretch with a view across the Mourne area.

Allow 20 minutes once you've found the spot. There's no charge, obviously - it's just sitting there. The walk isn't arduous, but do check conditions beforehand as the approach can get boggy. Spring and autumn tend to work best.

It pairs well with walking in the Mournes themselves - the stone sits in that landscape naturally, part of the region's fabric rather than some engineered attraction.
