Kilnaughton Chapel

The chapel sits alone on a headland near Port Ellen, on the Isle of Islay - just you, the wind, and 800 years of weathered stone. What remains of Kilnaughton is largely walls now, modest and austere, but the setting is what gets you. You're standing on a chunk of Hebridean coastline with views across to the Paps of Jura, and that silence feels earned rather than manufactured.

It's a walk of about twenty minutes from the nearest road, across moorland that's genuinely atmospheric rather than manicured. The chapel itself dates back to medieval times, though exactly what happened here has blurred with centuries. Locals know it, but you won't find crowds.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the isolation - this was a real place of worship, not a tourist stop. The setting tells you more than any plaque could. Worth the trek if you're already exploring Islay's southern coast, less so if you're just after a quick cultural tick-box. Families with young kids might find it a bit anticlimactic - there's not much to do once you're there except stand and look.

If you're based at the nearby Islay Glamping Pods, this makes a decent half-day outing combined with Port Ellen itself. Free and open year-round, though Islay weather being what it is, go on a clearer day if possible. The chapel doesn't vanish in mist, but the whole point of coming is the views.
