King George Playing Field

King George Playing Field is a proper little nature reserve just outside Swanage, the kind of spot locals know about but visitors often miss entirely. It's got woodland, grassland, and enough scrub to keep a pair of binoculars busy - you'll find everything from common birds to the odd buzzard if you're lucky with timing.

The reserve works best for families who want something low-key, walkers needing a gentle circuit before or after a beach day, and anyone interested in Dorset's wildlife without the crowds. The paths are straightforward enough for kids to manage, though it's not a destination you'd spend half a day at - more of a solid hour's wander, maybe ninety minutes if you're really into spotting things.

There's no entrance fee and no formal opening hours that I can find, which means you're free to turn up when it suits. Early morning's your best bet for wildlife, especially in spring and autumn when migrating birds pass through. The reserve also does decent work for pollinators and small mammals, so summer visits have their own appeal.

If you're staying at Swanage Bay View Holiday Park - literally half a mile away - this is an obvious add-on to a morning before heading to the beach or Swanage town centre. Even from Ulwell Holiday Park, it's only just over a mile, so worth fitting in around other south Dorset attractions. It's not a showstopper, but it's a genuinely useful spot if you want a bit of nature without the effort.
