King's Hill

A modest Iron Age hill fort just outside Lincoln, King's Hill is the sort of archaeological site that rewards a bit of leg work but won't consume your whole afternoon. The earthworks themselves are fairly subtle - concentric rings of ramparts that have mellowed considerably over two thousand years - but standing on top gives you a proper sense of why someone built a settlement here. The views across the Lincolnshire plains are genuinely good, and on a clear day you can pick out the cathedral in Lincoln itself.

It's really a walk rather than a destination, which means families with young children might find twenty minutes enough before restlessness sets in. Serious Iron Age enthusiasts will get more from it if they've read up beforehand - the site itself has no interpretation boards to speak of. The ground can be boggy depending on the season, so decent boots are essential.

What makes it worth the trip from one of the nearby caravan parks is the location. Shortferry and Seven Acre Farm are barely a couple of miles away, so it slots nicely into a broader exploration of Lincoln's archaeology and Roman heritage. You're looking at perhaps an hour including the walk and a poke around the summit. Free to visit, no facilities on site, and best tackled on foot from the road - there's limited parking nearby. Go midweek if you want it quiet. The real value is threading it into a park-based holiday where you're spending several days in the area rather than making a special journey just for this.
