Kingsdown Wood

The woodland walk at Kingsdown Wood, just outside Deal, is a straightforward affair - a mix of proper mature trees and open glades that feels properly removed from the coast even though you're never more than a mile or so from the seafront. The paths are well-maintained enough, muddy in winter but manageable most of the year, and it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's free, naturally, and you can knock out a decent circuit in forty minutes if you're just after a leg-stretch, or take longer if you want to poke about looking for birds or whatever.

For families based at Kingsdown Camping just down the road, this is ideal - close enough for a pre-breakfast wander and interesting enough to hold a child's attention for an hour without feeling like a proper expedition. Older kids and proper walkers might find it a bit short on drama, but it's a solid addition to a wider coastal walk routine combining it with paths down to the shingle at Kingsdown itself. The woodland isn't dramatic - there's no gorge or waterfall moment - but that's partly what makes it pleasant. It's gentle.

Hit it on a dry day and you'll have a genuinely nice morning. The light filters through nicely in spring and early summer. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Hawthorn Farm is only two miles inland - it's absolutely worth the short drive as a break from beach time. Just don't expect wilderness. This is comfortable, accessible woodland with no surprises, which for a family park holiday is rather the point.
