Kingsley Museum and Shop

The Kingsley Museum sits quietly in Bideford, a small space dedicated to the life and work of Charles Kingsley, the Victorian writer and clergyman who lived in these parts. Walking in, you're confronted with the kind of museum that doesn't shout about itself - glass cases of personal effects, first editions, correspondence, the sort of thing that matters enormously if you've read The Water-Babies or Westward Ho!, and passes by if you haven't.

It's genuinely worth an hour if you're into Victorian literature or local history. The museum fills in the gaps about Kingsley's time in Devon and his role in the community here. Families with older children who've encountered his work at school might find it interesting, though younger kids will likely find it a bit dry.

Bideford itself is charming - that's the honest assessment - and makes a decent base for a couple of nights. If you're staying at Roeys Retreat Campsite just down the road, the museum is barely a walk away. Coastal Cabins Glamping and Broad Park are also close enough that you could easily pop into town. The seafront's worth a stroll, and there are decent pubs and fish and chips shops dotted about.

The museum doesn't require hours of planning. Turn up, spend what time you fancy with the exhibits, and head back out. It's the sort of place that slots nicely into a day when you've already done a coastal walk or visited somewhere bigger nearby.
