Kirk Moor Plantation

The walk through Kirk Moor Plantation feels properly away from it all, even though you're only a few miles from Doncaster. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country park - think conifers, open paths, and the sort of quiet that makes you realize how little of Yorkshire actually feels empty anymore.

You get mixed woodland here, a blend of older plantings and newer growth. The paths are straightforward enough for families with kids, though it's not a destination with signage at every turn or facilities to speak of. Most people allow an hour or so for a decent wander; longer if you're the type who stops to photograph lichen or listen for woodpeckers. Walkers get the most from it - there's something about moving through dense trees that wipes your head clean in a way a park bench never does. Bring a map or know roughly where you're going; the plantation isn't confusing, but it rewards a bit of planning.

The real draw is access. If you're camped at Bawtry Caravan Park or Mooreacres nearby, Kirk Moor gives you somewhere proper to stretch your legs without driving anywhere. It's free, naturally, and there's no admission gate or visiting hours nonsense. Go early morning in autumn when the light cuts through the branches, or after rain when the forest floor smells like it should. Not Instagram-famous, but that's rather the point.
