Kitlands Coppice

The woodland here cuts straight through Worcestershire's quieter reaches, and it's the kind of place you stumble into rather than plan for. Kitlands Coppice sits just outside Bewdley - close enough for a morning walk from your caravan at Bank Farm Holiday Park, far enough that it feels proper remote when you're actually in it.

What you're walking through is proper old coppice woodland, the sort that's been managed for centuries. The trees come in at different heights and ages because that's how coppicing works - they've been cut back repeatedly, and the result is dense, layered forest that feels older than it probably is. In spring it's carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. Summer's when the canopy closes in and it gets genuinely cool and dark - useful if you've chosen a sweaty bank holiday weekend.

For walkers, this is better than an hour spent trudging around manicured nature reserves. There's genuine woodland texture here, paths that actually require a bit of attention, and none of that over-signposted feeling. Children will either love the scrambling potential or find it a bit too real and muddy - depends what you've raised them on.

The real advantage is timing. You can do this before breakfast or after an afternoon at one of the bigger attractions nearby, then head back for lunch. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly the kind of secondary spot that makes a park holiday actually feel like a break rather than a relentless schedule of paid-entry attractions.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour. Proper walking boots recommended - it does get boggy.
