Knabbs Ridge

The walk up Knabbs Ridge, just outside Harrogate, rewards you with views that justify the climb. It's not a dramatic fell - more of a proper moorland ridge that takes about 45 minutes to reach the top from the nearest parking, depending on your fitness and which route you choose. Once up there, the Yorkshire landscape opens out in every direction: rolling hills, valley floors, and on a clear day, sight lines that stretch for miles across the Dales.

This is genuinely good walking country rather than a tourist spot. Families with older kids who enjoy a steady hike will get real value here - it's not so steep that it discourages younger legs, but it's enough of a proper climb to feel like an achievement. History buffs won't find much to chew on, but walkers absolutely will. The ridge itself is straightforward terrain, though ground conditions can be boggy in wet weather, so decent boots matter.

You'll want to allow two to three hours to get up, have a look around, and come back down. Early morning gives you the best light and the fewest other people. Windmill Retreats is barely half a mile away - genuinely useful if you're basing a walking holiday near Harrogate. The Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite offers another solid option a few miles south if you're planning to tackle more than one ridge on your trip.
