Knaresborough feels properly medieval when you wander down to the water's edge. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag - literally carved into the rock face - is one of the oldest shrines in the country, while the famous House in the Rock shows just how ingenious locals have been about making use of the limestone cliffs. Street art adds unexpected colour too, with the Phone Box Mural and quirky Pub Owl bringing contemporary flair to historic streets.

Warren Top offers cracking views across the Nidd Valley, especially if you fancy a proper walk through Falls Wood. The town centre itself is compact but lively, anchored by the Frazer Theatre which puts on everything from amateur dramatics to touring productions. Market day brings a good buzz to the cobbled square.

Harrogate sits just four miles southeast - close enough for spa treatments and upmarket shopping, but far enough that you avoid the crowds back in Knaresborough. The train line from Leeds stops right in town, making it dead easy to reach without a car.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Rudding Holiday Park or Riverside Meadows puts you within walking distance of the gorge walks while keeping you close to both the Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes north) and York (16 miles east).
