Knows Wood

A proper woodland walk in Northumberland that doesn't require a guidebook or advance planning. Knows Wood near Stocksfield is the kind of forest where you can actually breathe - dense enough to feel like you've left civilization, open enough that you won't get hopelessly lost. The paths wind through mature trees, and there's genuine quiet here, which is rarer than you'd think.

It's best suited to walkers who like a gentle woodland amble rather than anything strenuous. Families with younger kids will manage fine for an hour or so, though there's nothing flashy to keep them entertained beyond the trees themselves. If your children need a visitor centre and a gift shop, this won't do it. But if they're the sort to spot birds or build stick structures, they'll be content.

Local woodland isn't usually a day-long attraction unless you're seriously into foraging or nature watching. Plan on an hour to ninety minutes maximum. Spring and autumn are the obvious times, when the light filters through properly and you're not battling midges. Summer can feel a bit oppressive under all that canopy.

It pairs well with Valley View Camping & Glamping just 2.4 miles away - far enough that you're not on top of the site, close enough for a decent walk before breakfast. The area around Stocksfield has enough going on to justify a few days, but Knows Wood itself is more of a break-up-the-day sort of stop than a reason to plan your whole holiday around.
