Knowstone Nature Reserve, Inner Moor

The open moorland at Knowstone stretches out with that particular Devon wildness - gorse-covered slopes, rough grass, and sky that seems to take up three-quarters of the view. It's proper moorland walking territory, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think and spot the occasional buzzard overhead.

This is a nature reserve, so you're here for the habitat rather than facilities. The Inner Moor supports heathland birds and insects, which matters if you're into that sort of thing, but honest assessment: it's not a destination on its own. It's the sort of spot you'd include in a walking circuit if you're based near Tiverton and fancy a few hours on the heights without the tourist crush of Exmoor further west.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no admission fee. You park up and walk. Allow two to three hours depending on how much you want to cover. Spring and early summer work well if you want to see nesting birds and wildflowers, though the moor can be bleak and boggy after rain.

If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping nearby, this makes a decent morning walk before heading into Tiverton for lunch. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's genuine Devon moorland without pretension - and sometimes that's exactly what you want. Real walkers will appreciate it more than casual strollers.
