L-Moor, Shepreth

The moor around Shepreth sits on the Cambridgeshire-Essex border, a proper slice of open heathland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards those who take the time to wander through it. You're looking at typical East Anglian landscape here - wide skies, gorse and heather depending on the season, and the kind of silence that makes you remember why you left the city.

It's the sort of place that appeals to serious walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, and there's no café or visitor centre to ease you in gently. Come expecting to move at a decent pace and you'll get on fine. In spring and early summer the heather's at its best, though frankly any time between April and October works. Winter's bleak but atmospheric if you don't mind damp boots.

Locally, L-Moor slots into a wider walking network around Royston, and you're well-positioned if you're staying at Shepreth Mill Caravan & Camping Holiday Park just down the road - less than a mile away, which is perfect for a morning walk before the weather turns. Guilden Gate Glamping, about four miles north, gives you a slightly longer jaunt but nothing punishing.

This isn't a destination attraction. It's what you do when you want to stretch your legs properly and escape the caravan or glamping bell tent for a couple of hours. Free, obviously. No facilities, so bring water. Don't expect signage or crowds. Just bring decent boots and a map.
