Lackmore Wood

The beech and oak woodland around Lackmore feels properly old-growth, the sort of place where the canopy gets thick enough that you lose track of time. It's a solid walk from Wallingford - nothing too demanding, but enough of a tramp through the trees to justify leaving the car behind.

What you get is straightforward woodland rambling. Footpaths wind through decent stretches of cover, and if you time it right - autumn's the obvious call - the floor becomes a carpet of leaves and the light goes golden. Spring brings bluebells in patches. Summer's too hot really, all shade and insects. The paths aren't maintained to death, which is refreshing; they feel used but not manicured.

This is walker territory, not a spot where you'll find a café or visitor centre. Families with young kids might get restless after an hour, unless they're the type who genuinely like forest exploration. Proper woodland enthusiasts will spend a morning here without complaint. Dog walkers get a lot out of it - there's enough room to let them off without feeling irresponsible.

If you're based at The Chilterns View or Bridge Villa Camping - both within six miles - Lackmore makes an easy morning or afternoon break from the holiday parks. It's the sort of place that's worth knowing about rather than worth planning a day around, but that's precisely its charm. No entry fees, no faffing about with opening hours. Just woodland.
