Ladham Wood

Ladham Wood sits just outside Tonbridge, a proper working forest rather than some manicured country estate. The trees are dense and tall - mainly sweet chestnut and oak - and the paths wind through without much fanfare or official signposting. What you get is a genuine walk through woodland where it feels like you've stumbled onto something local rather than a tourist tick-box.

It's the kind of place where walkers and dog owners actually spend time rather than pass through. The floor is soft underfoot, especially after rain, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting without demanding serious fitness. Most people will manage the main paths in 45 minutes to an hour, though you can easily extend it if you fancy exploring the quieter corners.

Timing matters here. Spring brings bluebells (genuinely worth planning around), and autumn is golden if the light hits right. Summer can feel a bit oppressive under the canopy, and winter is muddy but moody. Families with young kids won't find facilities or playgrounds - this isn't that kind of wood - but older children who don't need constant entertainment do well here.

Stay at one of the nearby sites - Tanner Farm Park is closest at 1.5 miles, or Glassenbury if you want slightly more space. Ladham slots nicely into a weekend exploring the Medway valley. It's free to walk, accessible, and genuinely peaceful without feeling contrived. Not Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.
