Lady Wood

Walking into Lady Wood feels like stepping back several centuries. This ancient forest near Stamford is the real deal - proper old-growth woodland with the kind of established trees you don't find in managed plantations. The paths wind through dense canopy, and depending on the season, you'll either be crunching through blankets of leaves or navigating muddy trails that demand decent boots.

It's brilliant for families who don't mind getting mucky and walkers after something low-key but substantial. The woodland floor is uneven, so it's not ideal for prams or elderly relatives with mobility issues, but kids aged five-plus will love the rambling nature of it. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore without rushing. There's something quietly satisfying about the sheer age of the place - you're literally walking where people have walked for centuries.

The nearest base is Stamford, a proper Georgian town with actual appeal beyond the woodland itself. If you're staying at Rockingham Forest Park or Castle Farm Campsite nearby, Lady Wood makes an excellent half-day venture without feeling like a special expedition. The glamping at Stamford Meadows is pricier but a treat if your budget stretches. Access is free as far as I can tell - no gates, no fees, just turn up and explore. Muddy shoes guaranteed, but that's rather the point with ancient woodland.
