Laggan Parish Church

The small stone church sitting quietly above Newtonmore has been there longer than most of us will manage - built to serve the scattered communities across Laggan Parish. It's the sort of place you stumble upon while driving through the Highlands rather than deliberately seeking out, but that's rather the point. The building itself is modest and unadorned, which somehow makes it feel more genuine than the tourist-heavy attractions elsewhere in the region.

Historically minded visitors and those tracing Scottish ancestry will find it worthwhile, particularly if you've got family connections to the area. The churchyard is peaceful and the views across the Highland landscape are genuinely worth a few minutes of your time. It's not the kind of stop that demands hours, but twenty minutes to wander round and take in the surroundings feels right.

Free to visit, obviously. There's no visitor centre or café nonsense - just the church, the graveyard, and the hills beyond. Go on a clear afternoon if you can, when the light catches the stone properly.

If you're based at Laggan Glamping & Caravan/Motorhome Site just down the road, it's a straightforward walk. Invernahavon Caravan Park, a bit further out, makes it worth combining with other stops in the area - perhaps heading into Newtonmore itself for lunch. The church works best as part of a broader wander through the parish rather than a standalone trip, but if you're staying locally, there's no reason not to pop past.
