Laigh Kyleston, dun site

A low grassy mound in South Ayrshire that doesn't look like much until you realise you're standing on an Iron Age fort. Laigh Kyleston is a dun - a fortified settlement from around 2,000 years ago - and while there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to hold your hand, that's rather part of its appeal.

What you get is the earthwork itself: defensive ditches and ramparts that would have protected a small community. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of imagination and a willingness to read up beforehand. Archaeologists have found pottery and metalwork here, evidence of genuine habitation, though if you're expecting dramatic ruins or stone walls, you'll be disappointed.

This is ideal for archaeology enthusiasts or anyone doing a serious walk through South Ayrshire's lesser-known sites. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much to do beyond walking the perimeter and trying to visualise what stood here two millennia ago.

It's free and accessible year-round, though winter can be muddy. Allow 30 minutes if you're treating it as a standalone visit, or combine it with a broader archaeological ramble.
