Lake

The water here is genuinely still - the kind of stillness that makes you realise how rarely you actually see that anymore. This nature reserve just outside Hereford is essentially a flooded quarry that's been left to do its thing, and what it's done is rather good. Shallow margins grade into deeper central sections, which means you get proper habitat layering: reed beds along the edges, open water in the middle, and patches where trees are muscling in and creating something between woodland and wetland.

Birdwatchers will spend hours here quite happily. Visiting in winter gives you the chance at grebes and diving ducks; spring brings the warblers back. You don't need specialist kit to enjoy it though - the walking is gentle and the paths are straightforward, so it works for families who want something a bit more grown-up than a playground but aren't ready for a full moorland hike. Allow a couple of hours if you're treating it properly, though you can do a quick circuit in forty minutes.

The reserve is free to access and sits within easy striking distance of Hereford if you're based at somewhere like Caplor Glamping or one of the caravan sites closer in. It's the sort of place that's better on a calm morning than a blustery afternoon - the water reflects everything properly, and you're far more likely to see wildlife when it's not being pushed about by wind. Not Instagram-famous, but genuine and rewarding.
