Lancaut Nature Reserve

The River Wye curves sharply at Lancaut, creating a proper oxbow bend that feels almost theatrical in its geometry. This nature reserve sits just across the border in Monmouthshire, a short drive from Lydney, and it's one of those places that rewards walkers willing to go slightly off the beaten path.

You're here for the woodland, mostly. Ancient oak and ash hang over steep banks, and in spring the bluebells are worth timing a visit around. The views back across the Wye towards the Forest of Dean side are genuinely striking, especially if you catch it on a clear afternoon when the light hits the water properly. The walk down is manageable but the return climb is properly steep - nothing technical, but your legs will know about it.

Historically minded types will appreciate the sense of being in a genuine borderland. The river's been a boundary for centuries, and standing here you can feel that weight of geography. It's not a place crammed with information boards or facilities, which some visitors love and others find frustrating.

It works well as part of a wider walk around the Wye Valley - plenty of other spots to string together if you're spending a few days in the area. If you're glamping at nearby Penhein, this makes an excellent half-day expedition. Allow two to three hours including the steep sections. Families with young kids should be cautious about the drop-offs; teenagers and serious walkers will find it straightforward. Go when it's been dry - after rain, those banks become slippery.
