Landsend Plantation

The woods around Landsend Plantation offer a proper walk through some decent Berkshire forestry, just outside Thatcham. It's not dramatically wild or anything - you're looking at managed woodland with established paths rather than genuine wilderness - but it's genuinely pleasant if you're staying nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving far.

The tree cover is solid and the paths are reasonably well-maintained, making it decent territory for a family stroll or a longer hike if you're up for it. You'll find the usual mix of deciduous and conifer woodland, nothing rare or spectacular, but the kind of place where kids can run about and blow off steam. Plan for an hour or two depending on how much ground you want to cover.

Timing matters here. Avoid peak weekends when other locals have the same idea, and go in spring or autumn when the paths are drier and the light filters through the canopy properly. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic in the dense sections.

If you're based at Lorne Hill Farm just up the road, this makes a logical morning outing before or after the holiday park itself. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's worth knowing about rather than driving ten miles looking for somewhere to walk. The woodland sits far enough from town that you feel semi-removed, even if you're never truly in the middle of nowhere. Proper Berkshire working forest, really.
