Larch Covert

Walk into Larch Covert and you're surrounded by tall conifers - mostly larch trees that give the place its name. It's a proper working forest, not a manicured country estate, so don't expect manicured paths or visitor facilities. What you get instead is the real thing: woodland floor thick with needles, shafts of light filtering through the canopy, and genuine quiet.

Near Stroud in Wiltshire, this is the sort of spot where walkers stretch their legs between longer rambles across the Cotswold edge. An hour's exploration will satisfy most people, though serious hikers can pick up trails that push deeper into the surrounding landscape. The forest floor is soft underfoot - wear decent boots if it's been wet, as it gets boggy in places.

It's free to wander, which is the main draw. There's no café, no car park amenities, no gift shop nonsense. Just trees, air, and space to think. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes unless they're the type to hunt for bugs and sticks. Photographers will love the light and texture, especially on overcast days when the mood is properly moody.
