Large Reclining Figure

Henry Moore's monumental bronze sprawls across the grounds near Ware like something from a half-remembered dream. The Large Reclining Figure stops you dead - it's massive, organic, and utterly at odds with the ordinary Hertfordshire landscape surrounding it. You walk around it rather than past it, and the thing shifts with every angle, revealing hollows and curves that weren't there a moment before.

This isn't a gallery in the traditional sense. It's outdoors, weather-beaten, and free to view (as far as we can tell - no admission charge). Moore carved abstraction from solid bronze, and the figure manages to be both threatening and peaceful simultaneously. Some will find it profound; others might struggle to see past the "it's just a blob" response. Kids tend to either be mesmerised or indifferent, depending on their tolerance for sculpture that doesn't represent anything obvious.

Allow twenty minutes if you're making a quick stop, longer if you're genuinely interested in walking round it properly. The nearby holiday parks - Toad Abode is particularly close at under a mile away - make this a viable add-on to a longer Hertfordshire break. It works well alongside other cultural stops in Ware itself, and beats sitting at the caravan when the weather's decent.

Go early morning or late afternoon when the light does something interesting with the bronze. Avoid midday when it's just a lump in bright sunshine.
