Lawn Spring

A proper walk through ancient woodland just outside Stevenage, Lawn Spring feels like stepping back into something older than the commuter belt has any right to preserve. The spring itself runs clear through beech and oak, and there's a genuine sense of the land doing what it's done for centuries - nothing manicured about it.

You're looking at a woodland stream walk rather than a destination you'd photograph and leave. Plan on an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and listen. The paths are decent enough but soft underfoot, so wellies beat trainers after rain. Families with primary-age kids will get something out of it - there's water to investigate and trees to climb - though older teenagers will find it a bit tame.

What makes it worth the drive from Stevenage is that it's proper countryside without the gift shop nonsense. No admission fee that I'm aware of, which adds to the appeal. Spring's the obvious time to visit when everything's shooting up and the water's running fast, but autumn's lovely too when the beech turns copper.

If you're based at Church Farm Ardeley just down the road, this slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's the sort of place you'd combine with a pub lunch back in town rather than make a whole day of, but that doesn't make it less worth doing. Sometimes the best bits of a holiday are the quiet walks where you remember why you wanted to leave the house in the first place.
