Leacet Plantation

You'll find Leacet Plantation tucked into the rolling countryside a short drive south of Penrith - it's the sort of place locals know about but most visitors miss entirely. This is proper woodland walking territory, the kind where you crunch through leaf litter and come across stands of mature trees that have been here longer than anyone can remember.

The plantation itself is fairly straightforward: forested land with decent walking paths that take you through mixed woodland. There's a quiet, almost meditative feel to it, which makes it ideal if you're after some peace rather than bells and whistles. You won't find visitor centres or café stops, so come prepared with your own supplies if you're planning a longer ramble.

It's a walker's sort of spot, really. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull after an hour or so - there's no specific attractions to point at, just trees and paths. But if you've got teenagers who can handle a proper walk, or you're the type who actually wants to escape the noise, you'll get something out of it.

Since you're this close to Penrith, it slots in nicely with a wider exploration of the area. Crossfells Campsite and Howdy Glamping are both within a couple of miles and highly rated, so you could base yourself there and work the plantation into a day of local wandering. Give yourself 90 minutes to two hours to do it justice without rushing. Check what the ground conditions are like after rain - it can get muddy.
