Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park

It's the kind of place that works brilliantly if you've got restless kids and you're already camped nearby in the Lee Valley. Animal Adventure Park sits just outside Waltham Cross and does exactly what it says - you walk round enclosures, see various creatures, have a bit of a poke about. Nothing fancy. Nothing that'll blow your mind if you've been to a proper zoo, but absolutely fine for an afternoon when you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted along the valley.

You get your standard fare: goats you can feed, deer, birds, that sort of thing. It's not enormous - you could cover the whole lot in ninety minutes without rushing. Families with under-tens will get more out of it than teenagers who've seen it all before. The enclosures are fairly basic, so don't expect wildlife reserve standards.

If you're camped at Fowley Mead or Lee Valley Caravan Park Dobbs Weir, it's practically on your doorstep - worth a half-day when the weather's decent and you need a change of scene. On a rainy afternoon though, you might find yourself wishing you'd picked somewhere with a roof. Check opening times and admission prices before you go - details seem thin on the ground online. It slots neatly into a Lee Valley holiday as one stop among several, rather than something you'd plan a trip around.
