Leek Golf Club sits on the edge of town, a proper traditional course that's been going for years. It's an 18-hole layout that demands respect - the rolling Staffordshire terrain means you'll be working the ball uphill and down depending on which nine you're playing. Not a championship course, but solid enough if you want a decent game without the pretension or the eye-watering green fees of the big-name clubs nearby.

This is for golfers, obviously. Serious ones who've got their handicap sorted, though the club does take visitors if you've got an introduction or book ahead. You'll need a full round to make it worthwhile - reckon on four hours minimum. Summer mornings are your best bet; autumn's lovely too when the crowds thin out.

If you're staying at Glencote Caravan Park just down the road - barely a mile away - or any of the other half-dozen camping spots within a few miles (Leek Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Intake Farm Campsite are both handy), adding a round here breaks up a park holiday nicely. Leek itself is worth a wander afterwards - proper market town with decent pubs and shops. The course won't dominate your trip, but if golf's your thing, it's the obvious choice locally.
