Levin Down Clump

A thick stand of beech and oak rising sharply from the Sussex Weald, Levin Down Clump is one of those places that stops you mid-walk. The trees are old and proper dense - you lose the sky pretty quickly once you venture in. It's woodland as it should be: damp underfoot in winter, cool and green in summer, with decent paths threading through if you know where you're going.

Walkers will find this worthwhile, especially if you're basing yourself near Chichester and want to escape the flatter terrain that dominates the area. The clump rises abruptly enough to feel like proper countryside rather than a stroll through a municipal park. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel you've gone somewhere, even though you're only a few miles from built-up ground. Families with older kids who enjoy exploring won't get bored - there's enough density and height to make it feel like an adventure rather than a quick amble.

You could knock this out in an hour comfortably, two if you're in no rush and want to pick a quiet spot to sit. Time it for autumn when the beech turns gold, or early spring when the woodland floor is thick with growth. The nearby Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits just under five miles away - manageable for a morning or afternoon walk from base camp. It's not dramatic enough to justify a detour on its own, but if you're already exploring the South Downs, the clump slots in nicely as a change of pace from the open chalk grassland.
