Liddington Hillfort

The walk up to Liddington Hillfort takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's steep enough that you'll notice it in your legs. Worth it though. You're looking at an Iron Age fort with ramparts that still command the landscape - proper impressive when you crest the top and see how the ancient builders used the slope to their advantage.

The views across North Wiltshire are genuinely expansive. On a clear day you can see for miles, which rather explains why someone decided to build a defensive settlement here around 600 BC. The earthworks themselves are well-preserved, with clear ditches and banks marking out where the old fort walls stood. It's the sort of place that makes you think about what those Iron Age communities were defending against, why they chose this particular ridge.

This is a solid half-day outing for anyone interested in archaeology or landscape history. Family groups with older kids will enjoy the hike and the views more than younger ones might - it's genuinely exposed up there, so bring a windproof. The nearest proper facilities are back towards Botswicky Copse, though there's not much there beyond a few local spots.

If you're staying at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky, it's only three miles away, so a morning visit before the afternoon drizzles in makes real sense. Don't expect crowds or visitor infrastructure - this is proper countryside rambling, the sort of place where you're genuinely alone with history and the Wiltshire wind.
