Limekiln Plantation

The woodland paths at Limekiln Plantation wind through dense tree cover just east of Dunstable, offering proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at more famous Hertfordshire spots. The forest floor is soft underfoot, mostly beech and oak, and there's a real sense of being away from things even though you're barely three miles from town.

It's ideal for families who want their kids to burn off energy on trails rather than standing around looking at exhibits. Dog walkers love it too - plenty of space to let them roam without faffing about on leads for hours. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum to properly explore, depending on which paths you take. The site itself is free to access, though I'd check locally whether there are any parking arrangements since information is thin on the ground.

Stay at Woodlands or Merlin Farm - both within shouting distance - and you've got a cracking morning activity before heading to Whipsnade Zoo or exploring the Chiltern Hills proper. Merlin Farm's the standout choice if you want top-notch facilities, and it's literally next to Whipsnade, so you could combine the two easily. Highridge Farm's further out but offers a more low-key camping experience if you're after peace and quiet.

The plantation itself won't blow your mind on a sunny afternoon - it's woodland, it's pleasant, it does the job. Come in autumn when the light filters differently through bare branches, or in spring when the forest floor comes alive. Winter's worth a visit too if you don't mind mud.
